. . . . .Rosie M. leaves the audience breathless
Francesca, at three bags full, has a knack for finding the avant garde! One of her recent revelations was Gala Wool, a local company. Wool purchased from the MacAusland mill on PEI is dyed by Brigid Weiler on Cortes Island, BC, in a brilliant natural palette. She is an expert at precision dyeing and can dye to order. I chose Gala Wool in Rose Madder to knit Melissa La Barre’s garter yoke cardigan for Spring. Careful swatching was critical for this project. Gala Wool is spun tight enough to give it the durability and body that it deserves. This yarn is in for the long haul, after all. It introduces itself as a coarse rustic wool, and many who are seeking a comforting knitting experience, dismiss it. The amazing palette of natural dyes, so beautifully displayed, beckons a second chance. This is a wool that gently teaches us about the transition that yarn makes in a patient knitter’s hands. Watch carefully what happens to this yarn as it is handled throughout the process of a project, including the gentle wash, and blocking. The last beautiful button was sewn on last night. In my handmade life, I have not made two of many things the same, but an encore of this project would be bliss. Bravo Gala Wool!
